Head Instructor - Sensei Timothy Hurt

Sensei Tim Hurt has trained and taught in the Martial Arts over the past 30 years. He has studied both traditional and non-traditional forms of Martial Arts. He is belted in four different Traditional Martial Arts and certified in four different Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics programs and one US Army. Tim retired from the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training as full time Defensive Tactics Instructor in 2008 and Tim retired from the US Army Reserves in 2010 as a Troop 1SG. Tim currently serves as a Patrol Sergeant for the Simpsonville Kentucky Police Department.

In the mid-1970s, Sensei Tim began his training in the martial arts. He began studying in 1981 under Grand Master John W. Mason, whose martial arts system is unique on so many levels. Grand Master Mason molded thousands, not just physically but also mentally, into complete martial artists. Though his students won national and international titles, his primary focus and vision was not winning an event or being the most skilled. He devoted himself to charitable work and mentoring troubled and less fortunate youths.

Sensei Tim obtained the rank of 4th degree black belt under Grand Master Mason as one of the first two in Kentucky to receive their black belts. Though LMA does not currently teach Master Mason’s system, Tim continues to practice the humanitarian principles and philosophies passed down from his Grand Master.

Tim boxed and taught karate while stationed in Germany and Texas with the United States Army. While in Germany he formed a post team that competed against a local kickboxing team. Tim has earned many medals throughout his years of competing in karate, boxing, kick boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the state and national level.

Tim began his career in Law Enforcement in 1989 as a patrolman with the Kentucky Division of Vehicle Enforcement. While with the agency he served in many capacities including Defensive Tactics Training Instructor and Use of Force Advisor. He has been certified in several defensive tactics programs and has trained under two of the most well-known and respected use of force experts in the world, Bruce Siddle and Dr. Paul Whitesell.

While Tim was introduced to the art of Jiu Jitsu in the mid 1990’s through his work with Dr. Whitesell, it was not until 2006 that he began seriously training with Four Seasons in Lexington, Kentucky under Carlson Gracie black belt Michael O’Donnell. Mike is the President of the Kentucky Carlson Gracie Network , the first Carlson Gracie black belt in Kentucky and is a well-respected long-time martial artist.

Tim currently trains and teaches Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu and received his black belt under Mike O’Donell and Carlson Gracie Jr. in 2015. Tim received his second black belt (the rank of Sho-Dan) in karatedo in 2013.
